The Homeward is a realistic experiential learning simulation that allows participants to explore the trade-offs and the economic, spatial, and social implications of new housing development in a community. By centering on housing scenarios, the game encourages participants to explore how diverse housing options can impact community dynamics, affordability, and livability. This simulation narrows in on the practical and strategic decisions around housing — challenging participants to weigh the merits and trade-offs of various housing types in a realistic, community-focused setting.
By working in teams and taking on roles involved in the housing development process, participants engage in collaborative problem-solving.
The simulation encourages participants to reflect on how housing scenarios influence community interaction. By physically constructing housing scenarios with 3D blocks or LEGO pieces, participants can more effectively visualize and understand spatial relationships, density, and land use. Additionally, the simulation enhances financial literacy by incorporating a financial model that introduces return of cost and tax revenue dynamics tied to housing choices. This model helps participants consider the financial viability of each scenario, guiding them toward sustainable and realistic decisions.
As they progress through the game, participants encounter real-world community trade-offs, making scenario-based decisions that weigh housing density, affordability, and shared amenities. This exercise encourages them to balance personal preferences with the collective good, fostering a holistic view of housing as a community-wide concern.
